Monopoly has undergone yet another facelift- the Spongebob Squarepants edition features Pineapples and Krusty Krabs in lieu of houses and hotels. Play as SB, Patrick, Sandy Cheeks, Mr. Krabs, Squidward or Gary the Snail. "Community Chest" and "Chance" cards have been replaced with "Treasure Chest" and "Life Preserver" cards. This particular version has a unique twist: a "Plankton coin" is placed on the 1st property ("Plankton's Lab"). Everytime a player rolls a "1" on the dice, Plankton advances 1 spot. When he makes it all the way around the board to the Krusty Krab (which replaces "Boardwalk"- "Park Place" is Spongebob's Pineapple), the game is automatically over, no matter who's turn is next. Players then tally up their net worth ($$$, property and all) and the player worth the most dough wins. This is a nice feature when playing with impatient kids that may not have the tolerance to sit through a traditional Monopoly marathon. Our kids are learning the value of money- my 6 year old son realized he'd have to forego buying the "Mermalair" if he wanted to buy the Krusty Krab. He has since decided to save his allowance for an upcoming Chicago trip instead of blowing it on toys or candy. I also have my kids count the money out to me, which their teachers tell me has improved their schoolwork regarding money. So, yes, this is a very educational game- kids learn you have to earn money and spend it wisely to come out on top. We love it and so will you. (More Toys…)
Great Game, December 7, 2006
By Sapphireminx (Through the Woods)
My husband and I purchased the Spongebob Monopoly game after my 2 year old saw us picking out board games. Yes, he is too young to know how to play, but since he loves the show so much, we are finally allowed to play a board game without him becoming impatient. It is also a great way to teach him about taking turns; he picks a character at the beginning of each game and gets to roll the dice and move his character. As it has been noted in other reviews, this Monopoly game finally has real custom pieces for the houses and hotels. We think it is a lot more fun than the original (possibly because we played the old one too often). (More Toys…)
WOW! After one night, my six year old FINALLY had money values down!, March 19, 2006 By Bill W. Davis "Thirtysomething Ma" (Athens, AL United States)
I always loved Monopoly as a kid, but I had no idea what educational value it offered until my son used his report card money to buy this. My husband and I played it with him and after the first round his math skills had at least doubled! He loves it and is so motivated, he has no idea he is learning! I L-O-V-E the Plankton rule! No more three day Monopoly games like when I was a kid, you can play a full game and still get the kiddies to bed on time. I know this is a lot pricier than the original, but I honestly don't think my son would be anywhere near as excited if it did not involve Spongebob! (More Toys…)
SpongeBob Fun for the Family!, May 29, 2007
By J. A. Odell (Connecticut, USA)
I never thought I could get my four young nieces to sit through a full game of Monopoly, but they managed to do it, and quite willingly at that, when SpongeBob was involved! They had so much fun identifying the properties highlighting their favorite episodes, not to mention "being" their favorite characters. Since SpongeBob has become a bit of a universal cultural symbol, even the older family members who haven't seen the show were able to enjoy the references. What really surprised me was the educational value of this game. Although young ones usually get bored just thinking of Monopoly, they loved developing strategies, managing their money, and most of all, conspiring together against the adults. Even in just a few hours -- and they really did last the whole four (yes, four!) -- you could see their money-counting skills getting better and their strategies becoming more advanced. I don't think they realized for a moment that they were doing any of this, which made it even better. They were too busy giggling and having fun. The girls can't wait to play again, and I have to admit that I may be looking forward to it even more than they are. Monopoly SpongeBob SquarePants Edition is a great game, and I plan to buy another set to keep here at the house for when they visit! (Also, the only so-so rating I can give the game is a "3" when it comes to durability, because -- let's face it -- putting paper money in the hands of excited children is going to equal some crumpling every time. That's just the way it goes!) (More Toys…)
